I have finally realized why I really became an EMT and why I have stayed working in my small town instead of going to a bigger service.
I became an EMT to help people, its not just a job its a calling. I will never forget my 1st EMT class and my instructor told me “We all have to be a little crazy to be EMTs.” Its honestly the best statement I have heard about EMS.
When people call 911 they are in crisis and its my duty to try and do everything possible to make them feel better. No matter how small I think the issue is the patient is not having a good day. No one calls 911 when they are completely fine. It could be a stubbed toe, but that patient is still in crisis.
Sometimes I feel like I should leave the service I am with, but I always stick out the situation and wait for it to get better. I do this because I am not here for the people I work with, I am here for my community. My community needs someone like me to be there for when they are in crisis. I can’t just up and leave these people. Last week on an early morning call my patient told me I was one of the most caring EMT’s she has had take care of her. Even though I was exhausted and a little cranky I did what I needed to do to make my patient as comfortable during her time in crisis.
Being an EMT is honestly one of the best things I have done with my life. I cannot be happier and absolutely could never see myself in any other profession.
